WAEC Releases 2025 WASSCE Results, Records Sharp Decline in Performance

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially released the results of the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates.

In a statement shared via its official X account, WAEC confirmed that candidates can now check their results online at waecdirect.org.

Speaking at a press briefing in Lagos, the Head of WAEC’s Nigeria National Office, Dr. Amos Dangut, described the conduct of the exam as a “huge success” despite logistical challenges.

Of the 1,969,313 candidates who sat the exam, 38.32% obtained at least five credits including English Language and Mathematics — a steep drop from the 72.12% recorded in 2024.

Dangut attributed the decline to WAEC’s newly introduced serialisation of objective test papers, which significantly reduced cheating during the exams.

He noted that 1,517,517 (77.06%) of the candidates had their full results released, while 22.94% are still being processed due to technical issues. Over 192,000 results were withheld for alleged exam malpractice.

A total of 12,178 candidates with special needs participated in the exam, receiving appropriate support.

This year also marked the beginning of WAEC’s transition to computer-based testing (CBT), with candidates allowed to choose between paper-based and CBT formats.

The Council warned states owing examination fees that their sponsored students' results would be withheld until debts are cleared.

Dr. Dangut reaffirmed WAEC’s commitment to full CBT adoption for school candidates by 2026.
