Wole Soyinka Celebrates 90th Birthday with Students and Scholarships

Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka, reflecting on his 90th birthday, shared his surprise at reaching this milestone during an interaction with 383 students at the 2024 Wole Soyinka International Cultural Exchange Programme in Abeokuta. Soyinka spoke about his life's experiences and his decision to become a writer to correct societal anomalies.

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun announced scholarships and laptops for nine top students in an essay competition held to honor Soyinka's birthday. Abiodun praised Soyinka's lifelong commitment to education and cultural exchange, emphasizing the importance of engaging youth for national progress.

Soyinka also addressed his historical actions and criticized Nigerians for blaming societal issues on external factors without self-examination. He attributed crimes like kidnapping and robbery to selfishness rather than poverty, and commended Abiodun for environmental improvements around his residence.

The Cultural Exchange Programme, celebrating its 14th year, featured essays, advocacy, and performing arts, highlighting themes of good governance and nation-building. The top essayists were Alabi Oluwanifemi, Okoye Collins John, and Adebusi Adeoluwa, showcasing the students' engagement with national and international issues.
