One person has died following a fire outbreak at Agbaakin Street, behind Testing Ground, Iwo Road in Ibadan on Monday.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Maroof Akinwande, the fire started after a lighted charcoal cooking pot was left unattended, causing nearby combustible items to ignite.
Akinwande said firefighters, supported by officers of the Federal Fire Service, quickly responded to the emergency.
“The emergency call came in at exactly 20:18 on Monday. Two rooms on the upper floor of a 12-room residential building were already in flames when our team arrived,” he said.
He confirmed that one woman was found dead, while two men were rescued alive. He added that the quick intervention of firefighters helped save the remaining parts of the building and properties worth millions of naira.
He emphasised that the incident was caused by negligence and advised residents to avoid leaving fire unattended.

Another Fire Hits Ibadan Agency
In a separate incident on Tuesday, fire affected the Agric Business Development Agency at Total Garden, Ibadan.
Akinwande explained that the fire service received a call at 09:20 from the agency’s General Manager, Mr Akinyinka.
Upon arrival, firefighters discovered the fire was caused by electrical sparks from a solar inverter control board on the upper floor.
Thanks to swift action, the fire was contained using portable extinguishers, preventing major damage.
“No casualty was recorded, and properties worth millions were protected,” the Fire Service Chairman said.
He urged the public to always use proper electrical cables and installations to prevent avoidable fires.
