World Suicide Prevention Day: FG Urges Nigerians to Take Mental Health Seriously

The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has called for renewed action to protect lives, reduce stigma, and expand access to mental health services as Nigeria joined the global community to mark World Suicide Prevention Day on Tuesday.

The ministry, in a statement on its official X handle, reminded Nigerians that their lives matter and that hope is real. “Today is #WorldSuicidePreventionDay2025, and while we can’t give you free jollof therapy or a hug through this screen, we can remind you of this: your life matters, and hope is real,” it posted.

First observed in 2003 by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO), the annual event seeks to raise awareness about suicide as a preventable public health issue. The 2025 theme, “Creating Hope Through Action,” highlights the power of small acts to inspire hope and save lives.

The Health Ministry noted that Nigeria is scaling up its response through the National Mental Health Policy, which integrates mental health into primary healthcare, and the Mental Health Act 2023, which provides stronger rights and protections for those living with mental illness. It added that campaigns and crisis support services are being expanded nationwide.

“Efforts are underway to expand mental health awareness campaigns and crisis support services nationwide,” the statement read. “Suicide prevention must be seen as a shared responsibility, with families, communities, faith leaders, and workplaces all playing a role.”

The ministry warned that stigma remains a major challenge, with thousands of cases going unreported annually. It urged Nigerians to check in on friends and loved ones, listen without judgment, and seek professional support when needed.

By joining the global observance, Nigeria reinforced its message that mental health must be prioritised alongside physical health. “Feelings change. Pain is temporary, hope is real,” the ministry stressed.
