The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has issued a stern warning against any form of obstruction to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in the discharge of its duties. Following a recent confrontation in Abuja during an attempt to arrest the former governor of Kogi state, Yahaya Bello, Fagbemi termed the incident as a "bizarre drama" and emphasized the EFCC's authority to invite individuals for questioning as part of its investigations.
In a statement released on Thursday, April 18, the AGF emphasized that anyone invited by the EFCC or other law enforcement agencies should comply and clear their name without hindrance. He condemned the obstruction faced by the EFCC, noting that the agency is legally empowered to invite individuals, irrespective of their status, for investigative purposes.
Fagbemi expressed concern over public officials who obstruct law enforcement efforts, stating that evading the law only worsens the situation. He reiterated his commitment to upholding the rule of law and promised to intervene if any agency oversteps its bounds, but stressed the importance of allowing state institutions to function effectively.
The AGF highlighted Nigeria's robust judicial system, urging individuals invited by the EFCC or any other agency to comply with the law rather than resorting to self-help or evasion. He emphasized the need for decency and civility in handling invitations, stating that failure to comply only tarnishes the country's image internationally.
