The Yoruba Self-Determination Movement, led by Prof Banji Akintoye and Chief Sunday Adeyemo (Sunday Igboho), has penned an open letter to President Bola Tinubu, urging for a peaceful separation of the Yoruba people from Nigeria. Signed by Akintoye, Igboho, and Ola Ademola, the letter calls for the President to establish a negotiation team within the next two months to discuss the exit of the Yoruba people from Nigeria.

This development follows an incident where armed agitators attempted to hoist their flag at the Oyo State Government House, which resulted in the arrest of 29 individuals. Akintoye and Igboho distanced themselves from the violent action and emphasized their commitment to peaceful agitation.

In their letter, the Yoruba Self-Determination Movement highlighted the ongoing violence perpetrated by the Fulani herdsmen in various parts of Nigeria, including Yorubaland. They expressed concern over the incessant killings, destruction of property, and kidnapping by the Fulani, stating that these actions have forced many Yoruba farmers to abandon their farms, leading to food insecurity.

The group alleged that the Fulani had killed an estimated 29,000 Yoruba people since 2015 and emphasized the need for the Yoruba Nation to separate from Nigeria. They rejected the idea of restructuring as a solution, citing that it would not prevent the Fulani from continuing their attacks in Yorubaland.
