Youth Protest in Akure Against EFCC Raid on Nightclubs, Demand Release of Arrested Individuals

Akure

In Akure, the Ondo State capital, youths staged a protest on Monday against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for raiding two nightclubs and arresting 127 people. The EFCC operatives had stormed the clubs on Saturday, alleging involvement in internet fraud activities.

The protesters, chanting solidarity songs, called for the unconditional release of those arrested, including a man celebrating his bachelor's eve. The protest caused a traffic logjam on Oba Adesida Road and the governor's office road.

Femi Akinremi, one of the protesters, criticized the EFCC's actions, questioning why enjoying oneself at nightclubs should be considered a crime. He called for investigations into the personnel's conduct.

In response, the EFCC confirmed the arrests but denied allegations of brutality or dehumanization. According to Dele Oyewale, the Head of Media & Publicity for the EFCC, tear gas was not used during the operation, as the Commission does not use such tactics in sting operations.
