Yusuf Kibiya, a former Commissioner for Agriculture in Kano State, has been elected as the new chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state. Kibiya secured a decisive victory over his opponent, Nura Nuhu, in the election held on Sunday, with Kibiya garnering 3,964 votes against Nuhu’s 244.
Kibiya, who served under former Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso from 1999 to 2003, expressed his gratitude and outlined the party's commitment to addressing internal challenges and gearing up for future electoral battles. In his acceptance speech, he acknowledged the PDP’s status as Africa’s largest political party, while highlighting the importance of unity and readiness for the upcoming 2027 general elections.
“Our party being the largest in Africa, no doubt, faces some internal challenges, but as always, we have learned to manage our differences,” Kibiya said. “We are working hard to ensure unity and mobilizing like never before for the 2027 elections, confident that the people will vote for us.”
Halilu Mazagani, chairman of the Election Committee, emphasized the need for unity among party members and stressed the importance of presenting credible candidates to the electorate.
Former Kano State Governor and PDP stalwart, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, also addressed the gathering, expressing optimism about the party's chances in the upcoming elections. Shekarau reaffirmed that the PDP is prepared to challenge any party, starting with the local government elections scheduled for October 26, 2024.
The election marks a significant moment for the PDP in Kano State, as the party looks to regain momentum and establish a strong foundation for future political contests.
