The Marine Unit of the Ports Authority Police (Western) Command has arrested seven individuals suspected of carrying out repeated attacks on international vessels within the Lagos Port corridor.
The Public Relations Officer of the command, Assistant Superintendent of Police Isaac Hundeyin, disclosed this in a statement on Friday.
According to him, officers on routine patrol earlier in the week spotted a suspicious speedboat near vessel CL YINGNA HE, which was berthed at Berth 12 of the Ports & Terminal Multiservices Limited. Initially, three people were seen on the boat, but as the patrol team drew closer, four more men were discovered lying flat on the deck in an attempt to hide.
Hundeyin explained that the suspects were found stretching a long bamboo pole toward the vessel—an indication that they were attempting to gain unlawful access. When questioned, none of them could give a reasonable explanation for their presence in the restricted area.
A search of the boat uncovered several tools, including a heavy iron cutter, saw blades, a bamboo stick fitted with a steel hook, a ship rope, a set of spanners, screwdrivers, pliers, a plastic bucket, and a speedboat powered by a 60HP Yamaha engine.
The seven suspects were immediately handed over to the Port Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation. Hundeyin noted that their method matched reports from previous attacks on international vessels, strengthening the suspicion that they were connected to those incidents.

She added that security efforts—including patrols, intelligence gathering, and inter-agency collaborations—would continue to be intensified to maintain a safe maritime space.
The Ports Authority Police is the security formation responsible for keeping Nigerian ports safe. Its Western Command, based in Apapa, oversees waterfront patrols and maritime security operations up to about 12 nautical miles offshore, working closely with the Nigerian Ports Authority’s security arm.
