FAAN Appeals for Patience as Go-Cashless Launch Causes Airport Gridlock

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has asked motorists and airport users to remain patient following heavy traffic congestion at Murtala Muhammed International Airport and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on the first day of its nationwide Go-Cashless programme.

According to FAAN, the gridlock was caused largely by drivers attempting to register for the new Go-Cashless cards directly at the toll gates, despite earlier announcements urging users to complete registration ahead of time at designated offices.

In a statement shared on Sunday, the authority thanked airport users for their cooperation as the cashless system officially took effect in Lagos and Abuja, in line with the Federal Government’s policy on digital transactions.

FAAN acknowledged the delays experienced at access gates, describing them as part of the normal adjustment process that comes with major system changes. To ease the situation, the agency said it has deployed additional staff, expanded registration points, and improved on-ground coordination to speed up traffic flow.

The Go-Cashless initiative eliminates cash payments at airport access gates, car parks, and executive lounges. Introduced in partnership with Paystack during a pilot phase in late 2025, the programme is designed to improve efficiency, increase transparency, and reduce risks linked to cash handling.

Motorists have been advised to obtain their Go-Cashless cards at FAAN commercial offices, access gates, or participating bank branches before heading to the airport in the future.

FAAN assured the public that it is closely monitoring the rollout and making necessary adjustments to ensure smoother operations in the coming days, while reaffirming its commitment to delivering a safer and more efficient airport experience.
