2027: Opposition Leaders Move Toward Alliance as PDP, ADC Hold High-Level Talks

Leaders of the opposition are intensifying efforts to form a united front ahead of the 2027 general elections, following a high-level meeting between key figures from the Peoples Democratic Party and the African Democratic Congress.

The meeting, held in Abuja at the residence of former Senate President David Mark, brought together prominent political actors, including Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola.

Sources familiar with the discussions said the talks centred on building a strategic alliance to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027. Issues such as a common platform, power-sharing, and broader collaboration were reportedly explored, although no final decision has been announced.

Speaking after the meeting, Makinde described it as a “solidarity visit,” noting that the gathering was aimed at reinforcing commitment to democracy amid growing political tensions.

Several influential figures were present, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and Aminu Tambuwal, among others.

However, a rival camp within the PDP, aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, distanced the party from any formal alliance. In a statement, the group insisted that the PDP had not authorised any joint meeting with the ADC, stressing that those involved acted in their personal capacities.

Despite the denial, insiders say discussions are ongoing, with opposition leaders determined to present a credible alternative and prevent what they describe as a drift toward a one-party system.

ADC Crisis Deepens as New Faction Claims Control of Party

The political manoeuvring comes amid internal crises within both parties. The PDP is grappling with factional tensions, while the ADC remains divided over its leadership, a situation further complicated by the stance of the Independent National Electoral Commission, which has withdrawn recognition from key party figures pending court rulings.

Earlier in the day, ADC leaders and supporters staged a protest in Abuja, demanding recognition of the Mark-led leadership and calling for reforms within the electoral body.

While no formal alliance has been sealed, the meeting signals a growing push among opposition leaders to close ranks ahead of 2027, with further consultations expected in the coming weeks.
