Arrest of Simon Ekpa and Operation Udoka Restore Peace in South East – CDS Gen. Christopher Musa

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has credited the arrest of Simon Ekpa in Finland and the establishment of Operation Udoka for the improving security situation in the South East. Speaking before the House of Representatives Committee on Defence during the 2025 budget defense, Musa highlighted the positive impact of these measures in curbing unrest in the region.

“With the arrest of Simon Ekpa, tension in the South East has greatly reduced. Operation Udoka is effectively addressing banditry and the sit-at-home situation, bringing much-needed stability. By working closely with local leaders, we are fostering a sustainable peace," he said.

Musa added that the sit-at-home orders on Mondays are diminishing as security forces engage in both kinetic and non-kinetic operations. The recent holiday season was peaceful due to proactive measures, including intelligence-driven actions and collaboration with cultural and religious leaders.

He emphasized the importance of joint efforts among Nigerians to address the country’s security challenges. “Security is a collective responsibility. We’re encouraged by the increasing flow of human intelligence and the support from communities,” he stated.

Troop Welfare and Border Management

Musa expressed concern about troop welfare, highlighting inadequate feeding allowances and accommodation for the increasing number of recruits. He called for investments in constructing and renovating barracks to accommodate troops returning from active operations.

On border security, Musa detailed efforts to combat child trafficking, drug smuggling, and illegal arms trade. He praised the synergy between the military and agencies like Customs and the NDLEA in addressing these issues.

Push for Local Weapon Manufacturing

The CDS called for increased support for local weapon manufacturing to reduce reliance on foreign imports. He cited the challenges of acquiring weapons internationally due to global conflicts and advocated leveraging local talent to produce military equipment.

“We need to harness the talents of local manufacturers, provide them with a platform, and produce weapons domestically. This will enhance our self-reliance and reduce dependence on foreign suppliers,” Musa said.

Budget Priorities

Chairman of the House Committee on Defence, Rep. Babajimi Benson, stressed the importance of ensuring that every Naira in the 2025 defense budget strengthens the country’s security apparatus. He urged agencies to prioritize initiatives aligned with national security objectives, leveraging intelligence and technology to tackle emerging threats.

The CDS reiterated the military’s commitment to peace and development, noting, “Without peace, there cannot be development. We remain steadfast in our mission to secure Nigeria and its people.”
