The Executive Committee of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has approved a N1.1 billion contract for the emergency procurement of communication gadgets and other equipment for security agencies operating in Abuja.

The FCTA Director of Procurement, Mr Musa Onsachi, disclosed this after the committee meeting held on Monday in Abuja. The meeting was presided over by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

Onsachi said the procurement is aimed at strengthening security operations across the territory and addressing existing gaps in critical communication equipment.

He explained that when Wike assumed office in August 2023, he identified significant shortages in the tools needed for effective security coordination.

“With this support, the security agencies will be able to carry out security operations more effectively,” he said, noting that the new equipment would improve response time and operational efficiency.

The latest approval follows earlier efforts by the minister to bolster security logistics. In July 2024, Wike presented 50 operational vehicles fitted with communication gadgets to security agencies to enhance the fight against crime in the FCT.

In a separate development, the committee also ratified contracts worth N7.3 billion for waste collection and management services in four districts within the Federal Capital City.

The Coordinator of the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council, Chief Felix Obuah, said the contracts cover Durumi, Wuye, Mabushi and Jabi districts.

According to Obuah, the total cost of the four waste management contracts stands at N7.3 billion. The committee also approved the supply of diesel to the Wupa Basic Waste Treatment Plant for a period of two years to ensure uninterrupted operations.

Additionally, the executive committee approved a contract for the procurement of food and non-food items to support residents affected by flooding in parts of the FCT.

The approvals are part of broader efforts by the administration to improve security, sanitation and emergency response services within the nation’s capital.
