A member of the Agunechemba state security outfit was killed and another injured following a violent attack by unknown gunmen in Umunze, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State on Thursday evening.

The assailants also burnt down five operational vehicles and razed the security post during the ambush, which reportedly turned into a fierce gun duel.

Eyewitnesses described the attack as brutal, saying the operatives fought gallantly before being overwhelmed by the firepower of the hoodlums.

“The boys [security operatives] fought like wounded lions. But when it got too much, some of them had to flee through the bush to survive,” a local source told The Nation.

The Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident and said that a Joint Security Force had launched a manhunt for the attackers.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has condemned the senseless attack and has ordered a full-scale investigation. We are also calling on the local community to support efforts to apprehend those responsible,” Ikenga stated.

The security situation in parts of the South East has remained tense in recent months, with frequent clashes between security forces and armed groups.

Authorities have intensified patrols in the area, while residents have been urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
