Gwarzo Withdraws Kano North Senatorial Ambition, Backs Barau Ahead of 2027

Former Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Abdullahi Tijjani Gwarzo, has withdrawn from the race for the Kano North Senatorial District seat ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Gwarzo announced his decision in a statement released on Tuesday, explaining that the move followed consultations with political stakeholders at the national, state and zonal levels.

According to him, stepping down was necessary to promote unity within the All Progressives Congress and strengthen the party ahead of the 2027 elections.

“In deference to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, and after extensive consultations with all concerned stakeholders, I have decided to withdraw my senatorial aspiration,” he stated.

He said the decision was taken in the overall interest of party cohesion and stability.

The development reportedly followed a meeting of key APC stakeholders from Kano North held on Tuesday night. The meeting was said to have been attended by Governor Abba Yusuf, former APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, Kano APC Chairman Umar Haruna Doguwa, and the Deputy Governor of Kano State, Murtala Sule Garo.

Sources said Gwarzo formally stepped down during the meeting and endorsed Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, as the consensus candidate for the Kano North Senatorial District.

The former minister expressed gratitude to his supporters, political associates, youth groups, women, elders and members of his media support team for their loyalty and encouragement throughout his political consultations.

“I sincerely appreciate the overwhelming support, prayers and goodwill extended to me by constituents, political stakeholders, youths, women, elders, the Ulama and members of our support community,” he said.

Gwarzo also acknowledged the support and guidance he received from Vice President Kashim Shettima, former Kano governor Abdullahi Ganduje, the lawmaker representing Bichi Federal Constituency, Abubakar Kabir Abubakar Bichi, and Baffa Babba Danagundi.

He described their leadership and counsel as valuable throughout the period of consultations and political engagement.

“Their commitment to the unity and progress of our great party continues to inspire and guide us,” he added.

He reaffirmed his loyalty to the APC and pledged continued support for the party’s growth and success at all levels.

The withdrawal is the latest development in the ongoing political realignments and consensus arrangements within the APC in Kano State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
