The House of Representatives has expressed serious concern over a recent incident involving Rep. Alex Ikwechegh (APGA, Abia), who was filmed assaulting and threatening an e-hailing driver, Stephen Abuwatseya. The footage, which has sparked widespread public outrage, prompted the House to issue an official statement condemning the lawmaker's actions.
In a statement released by House spokesman Akin Rotimi Jr., the House underscored its commitment to ethical conduct, stating, “The 10th Assembly, House of Representatives, takes these allegations very seriously. As elected officials, we hold ourselves to the highest standards of ethical conduct and accountability.” The statement further highlighted the House's commitment to upholding transparency, accountability, and ethical behavior, noting that such actions are expected from all representatives, both publicly and privately.
Rotimi called on the public to allow due process as the Nigeria Police investigates the matter, with Rep. Ikwechegh currently in custody for questioning at the Maitama Police Station in Abuja. The House assured that it will continue monitoring the situation closely, with further updates to follow as more information becomes available.
The House also opened channels for public engagement, inviting further feedback via official emails as part of its commitment to transparency and responsiveness to citizen concerns.
