Kwankwaso Moves to Stabilise NDC as Kano Chapter Crisis Is Resolved

Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso has stepped in to address internal tensions within the Kano chapter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), meeting with party leaders to resolve lingering disputes.

The meeting, held on Tuesday, brought together key stakeholders, including the state chairman, Hussaini Mairiga. According to Mairiga, the discussions focused on disagreements surrounding the party’s structure and leadership in Kano State.

Following the engagement, Mairiga confirmed that the issues had been settled, describing the meeting as productive and necessary for the party’s stability. He also publicly affirmed Kwankwaso as the recognised leader of the party in the state.

“We had a fruitful discussion with Sen. Kwankwaso and other critical stakeholders. All lingering issues have been resolved in the interest of unity and progress,” he said.

He added that the party had agreed to move forward collectively, urging members to remain committed and work together to strengthen the NDC ahead of future elections.

The crisis had emerged shortly after Kwankwaso’s defection to the NDC alongside Peter Obi, a move that raised concerns about control of the party’s structure in Kano. Tensions escalated when the state leadership resisted efforts to hand over control, leading to a standoff between both sides.

There were also reports of stalled negotiations and disagreements over leadership arrangements, with separate meetings failing to produce a consensus. The situation was further complicated by uncertainty surrounding the party’s planned state congress.

With the latest resolution, party leaders say the Kano chapter is now back on track, marking what they describe as a fresh start for the NDC in one of its key political strongholds.
