Lagos policemen treated us like criminals, says tech worker

A Lagos-based tech expert, Caleb Okechukwu, has accused policemen attached to the Orile Police Division of abducting him and his friend, Christopher Onyejekwe, on their way home from work.

Okechukwu shared his experience in a Facebook post on Tuesday titled “How Orile Police Division, Lagos, Kidnapped Me and My Friend,” alleging that the incident happened on Sunday, November 2, 2025.

He claimed that a Sienna bus suddenly blocked their path and, moments later, armed policemen jumped out in commando style, forcing them into the vehicle without explanation.

“Before we could say a word, they pushed us into their Sienna bus. They were armed with AK-47s and extra magazines,” Okechukwu wrote.

“While I tried to ask who they were, one of them warned me, saying, ‘When we get to where we’re going, your English won’t save you.’”

He said one officer punched him in the jaw while trying to seize his phone, and that several other people were also picked up in a similar manner as the bus drove through the area. Some of the victims, he claimed, were beaten and sustained injuries.

Okechukwu said they were eventually taken to Orile Police Station, where their phones were confiscated and they were detained overnight without interrogation. According to him, the officers only released their phones the next morning and asked them to call relatives to bail them out — a situation he likened to a kidnapping for ransom.

He identified two of the officers allegedly involved as Inspector Mary Abimbola and one Kally, accusing them of unprofessional and inhumane conduct.

“Inspector Mary Abimbola was the one who took our names that night. By morning, it was clear she’s everything a good police officer shouldn’t be — rude and disrespectful, even to elders,” he wrote.

“Kally, who is slim and fair, slapped people freely, including those who came to bail us. A very wicked man.”

Okechukwu said they were eventually released after the intervention of traders and community leaders from the Oduade Market, though the ordeal caused them significant business losses

Onyejekwe confirmed his friend’s account, reposting the story on his own Facebook page with the caption, “How my friend Caleb Okechukwu and I were kidnapped by Orile Iganmu Police Division in Lagos.”

When contacted, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Abimbola Adebisi, said efforts were ongoing to identify the officers involved, adding that the outcome of the investigation would be made public.

The incident comes amid growing criticism of police misconduct in Lagos, with residents frequently accusing officers of harassment, extortion, and illegal detention, especially at night.

In a similar case reported earlier this year, a student named Olawale Ayomide accused officers attached to the Igbeba Police Station in Ogun State of extorting ₦99,000 from him during a stop-and-search operation. One of the officers reportedly forgot his cap in the victim’s vehicle after the alleged extortion.
