In a decisive operation to combat terrorism in Southeast Nigeria, troops of Operation Udoka have arrested key figures associated with the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Eastern Security Network (ESN). The military successfully apprehended a founding member of the ESN, Pius Iguh, alongside three other notorious terrorist leaders in various locations across Imo and Abia States.
Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, announced the operation's success, highlighting that troops conducted a sting operation at Forward Operation Base (FOB) Orsu, which culminated in the arrest of Iguh. Similarly, troops at FOB Amaruku arrested Emmanuel Onwugu, another prominent IPOB commander, in Mbano Local Government Area of Abia State. In a related operation in Arochukwu, the military apprehended Ifeanyi Rock, a notorious cult leader, along with ten of his combatants.
The operation resulted in the neutralization of 24 terrorists, the arrest of 12 violent extremists, and the rescue of one kidnapped hostage. During these operations, troops recovered significant weaponry, including 10 AK-47 rifles, 15 pump-action guns, and 4 locally fabricated firearms, along with various ammunition and vehicles.
Between October 15 and 18, 2024, separate offensives across Imo and Cross River States led to further successes, contributing to a broader military campaign that has seen the neutralization of 140 terrorists and the arrest of 135 suspects nationwide in the past week. The military's efforts also extended to the Niger Delta region, where troops dismantled 47 illegal oil refining sites, preventing an estimated loss of N1.75 billion to oil theft.
In the North East, troops of Operation Hadin Kai reported neutralizing 43 terrorists, arresting 27 suspects, and rescuing 25 kidnapped hostages. Notably, 27 individuals surrendered to the military during operations in the region.
Meanwhile, Operation Safe Haven in the North Central zone neutralized 14 violent extremists, arrested 45 individuals, and rescued 12 kidnapped hostages, while Operation Whirl Stroke reported the neutralization of 7 terrorists and the arrest of 16 others.
Major General Buba reaffirmed the military’s commitment to defeating terrorism, stating, “Our ongoing operations have significantly weakened the terrorists’ capabilities. We will continue to innovate and adapt to meet the challenges ahead.” He emphasized the importance of citizen cooperation, urging Nigerians to remain vigilant in the fight against terrorism.
The military's sustained efforts aim to restore peace and security across the nation as it continues to address the multifaceted challenges posed by terrorism.
