The Nigerian Army's acting Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Olufemi Oluyede, has called on troops in Sokoto to intensify their offensive against the newly emerging terror group, Lukarawa. Visiting the 8 Division of the Nigerian Army in Sokoto, Oluyede emphasized the need for local communities to support security operations with accurate intelligence, urging residents to be vigilant and proactive in combating the group's influence.
The Defence Headquarters recently identified Lukarawa as an extremist group with ties to jihadi factions in Mali and Niger, underscoring its connection to regional instability. This group has reportedly been recruiting local youths in Sokoto and Kebbi through financial inducements, raising security concerns in Nigeria's northwestern states. According to the Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj. Gen. Edward Buba, Lukarawa's presence is a result of political turmoil in neighboring countries.
In response to the group's activities, the Nigerian Army has mobilized troops under Operation Fasan Yamma to affected areas, with air support from the Nigerian Air Force targeting terror strongholds. Military sources confirmed operations aimed at dislodging Lukarawa, restoring peace, and securing the region. Meanwhile, local residents have reported the group's extortion practices, enforced taxes, and violent crackdowns on communities, escalating fears of a protracted crisis.
Community leaders, security forces, and government officials are now cooperating closely to stem the group's expansion. The Arewa Consultative Forum has also urged immediate action to dismantle Lukarawa before it gains further ground, citing the devastating impact of previous insurgencies. The Forum's call highlights the pressing need for intensified security strategies to ensure lasting peace and stability across the nation.
