The New Nigeria Peoples Party has announced plans to proceed with its congresses and national convention, despite delays by the Independent National Electoral Commission in recognising the leadership led by Agbo Major.

This position was made known in a statement issued in Lagos by the party’s founder, Boniface Aniebonam, who insisted that preparations for upcoming elections would not be stalled.

According to him, the party has already submitted its timetable for congresses, primaries, and convention to INEC, adding that it remains committed to contesting all elective positions, including the 2027 presidential election.

Aniebonam expressed concern over INEC’s continued delay in recognising the party’s National Working Committee, despite existing court rulings backing the leadership.

He noted that prolonged leadership disputes and the commission’s inaction have cost the party valuable opportunities to participate fully in elections across the country.

Despite this, he said the NNPP would move forward with its internal processes while awaiting compliance with the court’s directives.

“We can no longer afford to deny our members the chance to participate in elections,” he said, stressing that time is running out as the 2027 general elections approach.

Aniebonam also reaffirmed the party’s resolve to pursue full recognition of the Major-led leadership, maintaining that court orders should take precedence over administrative decisions.

He added that the party had engaged INEC to understand the reasons behind the delay, noting that there is no legal barrier preventing the commission from complying.

To support his argument, he referenced past political cases, including those involving Rotimi Amaechi and the Zamfara election disputes, as well as the experience of the late Arthur Nzeribe, all of which underscored the importance of respecting judicial rulings in Nigeria’s electoral process.
