Opposition Leaders Gather in Ibadan for National Unity Summit

Top opposition figures from across Nigeria have converged in Ibadan, Oyo State, for a high-level summit aimed at strengthening collaboration and presenting a united front ahead of future elections.

The meeting, held at the Banquet Hall of the Oyo State Government House, is themed “That We May Work Together for a United Opposition to Sustain Our Democracy.” It brings together leaders from major political parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo is chairing the summit, while Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde is hosting the event.

Several prominent politicians have confirmed their participation. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar announced his arrival via social media, describing the gathering as a crucial moment for opposition unity. Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso also expressed optimism about engaging with other national leaders.

Other notable attendees include former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal and Lagos Labour Party chieftain Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour.

The summit is expected to address key national issues, including economic challenges, insecurity, and the state of Nigeria’s democracy. Experts and public figures such as Chidi Odinkalu, Usman Bugaje, Mike Igini, and Pat Utomi are scheduled to deliver presentations on governance, electoral reforms, and economic development.

Security analyst Kabir Adamu is also expected to speak on the country’s ongoing security concerns.

Organisers say the gathering is a strategic response to Nigeria’s current socio-economic and political challenges, with a focus on building consensus and strengthening cooperation among opposition parties.

Meanwhile, the African Democratic Congress has alleged plans by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to disrupt the summit—an accusation the APC has yet to respond to as of press time.

Despite the tension, participants remain focused on forging stronger alliances and positioning the opposition as a credible alternative in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
