As the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) navigates through internal power struggles, its National Working Committee (NWC) has expressed confidence in the acting national chairman, Ambassador Umar Ilya Damagum. The NWC's vote of confidence, coming amidst secret meetings among intra-party factions, signals a critical juncture in the party's leadership dynamics.
According to Debo Ologunagba, the party's national publicity secretary, the decision to support Damagum was reached during the NWC's formal meeting. Ologunagba emphasized the acting national chairman's efforts in stabilizing and repositioning the PDP as Nigeria's main opposition party.
The motion for the vote of confidence was presided over by the deputy national chairman (south), Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja, and moved by the National Vice Chairman (South East), Chief Ali Odefa, with the National Treasurer, Hon. Yayari Mohammed, seconding it. The NWC reiterated its commitment to the party's stability, growth, and success.
The pro-Nyesom Wike camp, which has supported Damagum, sees the NWC's vote of confidence as a victory. However, the final decision on Damagum's tenure and other critical party matters will be made in upcoming formal meetings. Scheduled meetings include the National Caucus meeting in Bauchi State, the Board of Trustees meeting, and the National Executive Committee meeting, all of which are crucial for determining the PDP's future direction.
