Plateau Police Arraign 14 Motorists Over Covered and Fake Number Plates

The Plateau State Police Command has arraigned 14 motorists before a court in Jos for offences related to covered number plates and the use of multiple or unauthorised registration plates.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Alfred Alabo, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday, noting that the move was part of ongoing efforts to enforce vehicle registration laws and strengthen security across the state.

According to him, the operation was carried out under the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, and aimed at tackling security threats linked to unregistered vehicles, concealed or altered number plates, and the use of unauthorised foreign registration numbers.

Alabo explained that 14 vehicles had so far been impounded, while their owners and operators were charged to court for various offences, including operating unregistered vehicles, using covered or defaced number plates, displaying foreign plates without approval, and replacing official registration numbers with manufacturer logos or other inscriptions.

He said the exercise was designed to prevent criminals from taking advantage of improperly registered vehicles to avoid detection by security agencies.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Bassey Ewah, directed officers involved in the operation to remain professional and ensure strict compliance with the law.

He emphasised that the exercise was not meant to intimidate or harass law-abiding residents but to improve public safety and support crime prevention efforts.

The police urged motorists in Plateau State to register their vehicles properly and ensure that their number plates remain visible at all times.

The command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property and appreciated residents for their cooperation in maintaining peace and security in the state.
