On Monday morning, tension flared in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, as police clashed with protesters from the "Take-It-Back" movement. The protesters, including Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and the Niger Delta Congress, had gathered at Isaac Boro Park to demonstrate.
However, the protest quickly met resistance from the police, who initially asked the crowd to disperse before resorting to the use of minimal force. As the protesters began singing solidarity songs and marched within the park, they eventually moved to the bustling Aba Express Road.
The police, stationed at the CFC junction, intercepted the protestors and again instructed them to vacate the street. When the protesters refused to comply, police fired teargas to disperse the crowd. The use of teargas led to the scattering of the protesters, ending the demonstration for the time being.
The incident highlights the ongoing tension between protest groups and law enforcement in Nigeria, with both sides continuing to stand firm in their positions.
