Police Council Endorses Disu as Substantive Inspector-General

The National Police Council has unanimously endorsed the appointment of Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police.

The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the development after the council’s meeting at the State House in Abuja, which lasted about 40 minutes.

“Yes, they have unanimously endorsed Disu as IGP,” Onanuga said.

The meeting began around 2:15 p.m. when the President arrived at the Council Chamber. It was held in line with the provisions of the Police Act 2020, which mandates the Police Council to consider and formalise the appointment of the Inspector-General of Police.

Following the resignation of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun last Tuesday, the Presidency had indicated that the council would be convened to address the matter.

In an earlier statement, Onanuga explained that after the council’s consideration, Disu’s name would be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation, as required by law.

The Police Council, chaired by the President, includes all 36 state governors, the Chairman of the Police Service Commission and the Inspector-General of Police.

Those present at the meeting included Vice President Kashim Shettima, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, and Head of the Civil Service Didi Walson-Jack. Governors from several states, including Enugu, Nasarawa, Ogun, Kwara, Plateau, Ondo and Lagos, were also in attendance, alongside the Deputy Governor of Kogi State and the Ministers of the Federal Capital Territory, Police Affairs and Interior.

Disu, 59, had been serving in an acting capacity since Wednesday, following Egbetokun’s departure.

Although Egbetokun cited “family issues” in his resignation letter, sources within the Presidency and the police establishment disclosed that he was summoned to the Presidential Villa on Monday evening and informed that he would be stepping down.
