Regina Akume Urges SGF to “Return to Christianity” at Son’s Wedding in Makurdi

The lawmaker representing Gboko/Tarka Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Mrs Regina Akume, has publicly appealed to her husband, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, to return fully to the Christian faith, saying his success and rise in life are rooted in Christianity.

She made the remarks on Sunday during the wedding reception of their son, held in Makurdi, Benue State. Senator Akume, a former governor of Benue State, also celebrated his 72nd birthday over the weekend.

A video of Mrs Akume’s speech, which later circulated on social media, showed her offering prayers for her husband’s long life and good health while urging him not to abandon Christianity.

“I pray that God will increase his years and give him sound health of mind and body, with wisdom to do the right thing,” she said.

She added that Christianity played a central role in her husband’s journey to the height he has reached in public life.

“He should remember that he is a Christian. It is Christianity that brought him this far. To drop Christianity now and follow anything else will not bring success. My advice to him is to come back to Christianity and follow the way of Christ,” she said.

According to her, their family’s rise, including his appointment as Secretary to the Government of the Federation, was achieved through faith in Jesus Christ and not through human opposition.

“We came this far through Jesus Christ, not through enemies. Jesus Christ is still alive and still working for us. I wish he would come back fully to Christianity,” she added.

Her comments have drawn public attention amid widespread discussions following reports that Senator Akume recently married another wife.

The SGF is reported to have married Zaynab Ngohemba-George, the former wife of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi. News of the marriage became public on December 26, 2025, after a family member welcomed Zaynab into the Akume Dajoh family in a social media post that quickly went viral.

The post described her as a new addition to the family, sparking mixed reactions across social media platforms.

A spokesperson for Senator Akume later confirmed the marriage, clarifying that the union is more than a year old and not a recent development, as widely speculated.

Zaynab Ngohemba-George was previously married to the Ooni of Ife in a traditional ceremony in 2016, but the marriage ended in 2017. She later relocated abroad and became known for her philanthropic activities.
