TikTok Creator “ugly_gal_jola” Apologises After Viral Bus Assault Incident in Lagos

A TikTok beauty content creator identified as Jola, known on the platform as ugly_gal_jola, has publicly apologised to an elderly woman she referred to as “grandma” following a viral video showing a physical altercation inside a commercial bus in Lagos.

The incident, which has sparked widespread debate online, reportedly began as a disagreement over phone volume during a trip from Ikotun to Igando but quickly escalated into a confrontation between both women inside the vehicle.

Following police involvement in the matter, Jola released an apology video on Monday, addressing both the elderly woman and the public.

“So hi guys, I am here to make an apology video for the video I posted days ago that went viral. I am so sorry, grandma. It was not my intention to beat grandma. All cases have been settled. I was called to the police station and they said the case is already settled. Grandma, I am so sorry. Thank you,” she said.

Despite the apology, reactions online remain divided, with many social media users continuing to debate who was at fault and whether the response was appropriate.

In her earlier viral video before police intervention, Jola explained that the altercation started after the elderly passenger complained about her phone volume and allegedly began insulting her.

According to her, she reduced the volume but tensions continued to rise inside the bus.

“I reduced the volume, but the woman kept complaining and started insulting me. I know she is a grandma, but she was insulting me and shouting on me in the bus,” she said.

Jola further alleged that the situation turned physical when the elderly woman slapped her twice, which led to her reacting in anger.

“She slapped me again, and that was when I reacted… I beat her very well. I used her as a scapegoat,” she admitted in the video.

The footage, which was reportedly recorded during the incident, showed passengers in shock as the confrontation unfolded.

Eyewitnesses also claimed the dispute continued briefly even after the bus stopped.

The matter was later reported to the police after the elderly woman’s family recognised Jola from the viral video. This led to her invitation for questioning over the alleged assault.

A separate clip showing Jola in handcuffs at a police station further fuelled public reactions and discussions across social media platforms.

While some users condemned her actions as excessive regardless of provocation, others argued she was first assaulted and merely reacted in self-defence.

The incident has since sparked broader conversations about conflict resolution in public transport, respect for elders, and the boundaries of self-defence.

Authorities have confirmed that the case has been resolved following police intervention, though discussions around the incident continue online.
