In a significant breakthrough against terrorism in the North-West, troops of the 17 Brigade, under Operation Fasin Yamma, have neutralized eight terrorists in a fierce encounter along the Kurfi–Batsari Road in Katsina State.
The operation, which took place on Wednesday, was disclosed in a statement released Thursday in Abuja by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Markus Kangye.
According to the military spokesman, the troops stationed at the Forward Operating Base (FOB), Kurfi, swiftly responded to terrorist activities in the area, engaging the assailants in a prolonged and intense firefight.
“The terrorists suffered significant casualties during the engagement. Our troops recovered five AK-47 rifles, six magazines, and 13 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition from the scene,” Kangye confirmed.
Wounded Soldier Receiving Treatment
While the military successfully repelled the threat, the Defence Headquarters confirmed that one soldier sustained injuries during the operation and has been evacuated to the 17 Brigade Medical Centre for treatment.
“The situation remains under control and calm. The morale and fighting efficiency of our troops remain high,” Kangye said.
Reassurance from the Military High Command
Maj.-Gen. Kangye commended the professionalism and gallantry of the personnel involved in the operation and reaffirmed the Nigerian military’s commitment to securing the lives and properties of citizens across the country.
“We reassure Nigerians of our continued efforts to ensure safety and national security, particularly in areas prone to insurgent and bandit attacks.”
Background: The Kurfi–Batsari Axis
The Kurfi–Batsari corridor has long been a vulnerable stretch plagued by armed banditry, kidnapping, and terrorist ambushes. It forms part of the wider conflict zone in the North-West, where the Nigerian Armed Forces have intensified clearance operations under various theatre commands.
Operation Fasin Yamma, meaning "Blazing North", is one of several regional operations coordinated by the Defence Headquarters to tackle insecurity in volatile areas.
Wednesday’s success is another morale-boosting win for troops combating insecurity in Katsina and its environs. While challenges remain, the Nigerian military’s proactive posture in high-risk areas is crucial in reclaiming ungoverned spaces and restoring public confidence.
As security forces continue to eliminate threats, the public is encouraged to remain vigilant and support ongoing efforts through timely information sharing and cooperation.
