A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has taken control of the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja after it was reopened by the Nigeria Police Force.

The development was confirmed on Saturday by the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), led by Abdulrahman Mohammed, through its National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed. The group warned that it would not tolerate any actions capable of causing disruption or breaching peace at the secretariat.

The PDP has been dealing with a prolonged internal crisis that escalated on November 18, when rival factions clashed at its national headquarters, Wadata Plaza, Abuja. One faction, led by Tanimu Turaki and backed by Governors Seyi Makinde and Bala Mohammed, confronted the Wike-backed group led by Mohammed.

After months of legal battles, the Court of Appeal of Nigeria ruled on March 9 in favour of the Wike-aligned faction, nullifying the November 16 Ibadan convention supported by the governors.

Reacting to the latest development, the Mohammed-led NWC commended the police for what it described as professionalism and respect for the rule of law, noting that the reopening of the secretariat followed valid court orders.

According to the statement, both the Wadata Plaza headquarters and Legacy House in Maitama have now been unsealed and handed over to the party leadership in line with the court’s directive.

The faction also issued a strong warning against any further disruption, urging members to remain law-abiding, while security agencies have been placed on alert to deal with any violations.

It added that the development signals a resolution of the party’s internal crisis and called on aggrieved members to embrace unity moving forward.

The group also praised Wike for his role during the crisis, describing his support and leadership as instrumental in stabilising the party.
