Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has unveiled a petrol subsidy program to support farmers in communities impacted by the Boko Haram insurgency. Speaking in Bama town on Friday during the distribution of farm inputs to over 5,000 farmers, the governor announced that petrol, which costs between ₦1,000 and ₦1,200 per litre in Maiduguri, will now be available to farmers for ₦600 per litre.
This initiative aims to ease the financial burden on farmers and enhance agricultural productivity in regions devastated by conflict. Zulum highlighted the success of a similar program in Damasak, Mobar Local Government Area, last year, which led to increased food production and improved livelihoods.
The governor also distributed essential farm inputs, including:
- 2,000 bags of blended NPK fertiliser
- 1,000 water pumps
- 620 gasoline pumps
- 380 solar water pumps
- 1,000 sprayers
- 800 rolls of 2-inch flexible hose
- 1,000 litres of pesticides and seeds
Additionally, over 100 tube wells have been constructed for irrigation farming, with approval granted for an extra 250.
During visits to Darajama and Goniri villages in Bama Local Government, Zulum inspected ongoing reconstruction efforts and expressed satisfaction with the quality of work. He reaffirmed his administration's commitment to the resettlement and rehabilitation of insurgency-affected communities, thanking the federal government for its robust support.
Governor Zulum's initiatives underscore his administration's focus on restoring economic stability and improving the livelihoods of displaced farmers in Borno State.
