The Kano State Government has instructed the Hisba Board to begin preparations for the mass wedding of about 2,000 couples, as part of its ongoing social support programme.
Speaking with PUNCH Online on Thursday, the board’s Deputy Commander-General, Sheikh Mujahid Aminudeen, confirmed that plans are already underway following the directive from Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
“We are planning to organize another round of mass weddings for 2,000 couples, as directed by the state government under the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf,” he said.
Although Sheikh Aminudeen did not reveal the exact date of the ceremony, he explained that there are clear procedures that every participant must follow before the marriage can take place.
According to him, all intending couples must first register and undergo mandatory medical screening to confirm their health status. The tests include checks for HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, genotype compatibility, and drug use, among others.
“The medical screening is compulsory for all participants,” he emphasized. “Anyone who refuses to go through it will be automatically disqualified from the programme.”

Governor Yusuf’s administration reintroduced the mass wedding initiative to assist women — including widows, divorcees, and spinsters — whose families cannot afford the high cost of traditional marriage ceremonies.
Beyond financial support, the programme also aims to reduce social issues such as prostitution and other vices, by helping eligible singles and divorcees settle into stable family lives.
